2-Methylisoborneol is formed by Cyanobacteria, Actinobacteria and algae in lakes, reservoirs and water distribution systems. It has a very low odour threshold and is one of the most common flavour faults in potable water. The compound imparts an unpleasant earthy note, reminiscent of peat or compost.
