Beer flavour standard used to train professional beer tasters to recognize and scale the intensity of skatole character.

Skatole is formed by bacteria growing in water, or contributed, pre-formed, via ground water pollution. The compound imparts an unpleasant, somewhat nauseating, faecal note to water. It can also be indicative of faecal contamination of the water supply.
