Certified soft drinks flavour standard used to train professional soft drink tasters to recognize and scale the intensity of mercaptan character.
Methanethiol is introduced to soft drinks through use of contaminated carbon dioxide supplies. It can also arise through microbiological spoilage and non-microbiological chemical reactions. It imparts an unpleasant sulphur note to soft drinks, reminiscent of drains or rotting garbage.
