6-chloro-o-cresol contaminates soft drinks through ingredients, water or packaging materials. Such is its flavour-activity it can also taint product through airborne transmission. It imparts an antiseptic, medicinal note to contaminated products, regarded by consumers as unpleasant and tainted even at low levels.
