Chlorophenols are produced in reactions involving naturally-occurring phenolic compounds in water, and free chlorine added as a disinfectant. They can also be imparted directly to water as a result of environmental contamination. Chlorophenols impart an unpleasant taint to water, reminiscent of mouthwash.
