Chlorophenols contaminate wines through residues of disinfectants on production equipment or packaging materials. They can also be caused by admixture of phenolic detergents and chlorine cleaning agents. Chlorophenolic taints resemble antiseptic mouthwash and generally meet with a high level of consumer rejection.
