Soft drinks flavour standard used to train professional tasters to recognize and scale the intensity of earthy-damp soil character.

Ethyl fenchol primarily taints soft drinks via use of contaminated formulation water. It is formed in lakes, reservoirs and water distribution systems by microorgamisms and through decomposition of dead microbes. It imparts an unpleasant earthy odour which is reminiscent of damp or freshly-dug soil.
